Reading a Digital Meter

First check your bill:

  • if there are two readings on your bill (often labelled Normal and Low or Night and Day) then you should take two readings from the meter.

Simple meters

If you only need one reading and there is one display on your meter that doesn’t cycle through different screens, simply take down this reading. Likewise if there are two displays and you need two readings.

Advanced meter

See over the page for full instructions.

Once you have your meter readings, enter them into the SystemsLink database
(see the SystemsLink Simple User Guide).

If you’re not sure which readings to use, note down the contents of every screen (including the labels) and send in an e-mail to Karen; she will e-mail back identifying the reads you need.

Advanced meters

More advanced meters have a single display, but several screens of information. Either:

  • the display will automatically cycle through several screens, or
  • there is a blue or yellow button – press the button to cycle through all the screens.

One or more screens will show ‘KWH’ (at the start or end, or above or below the numbers); these are the ones you are interested in. You may also see the date, ‘KVAR’, ‘MAX’ etc.

If you have more than one reading on your bill, the screens may be labelled:

  • ‘R1’ and ‘R2’ – ‘R1’ is the Day reading and ‘R2’ is the Night reading
  • ‘L’ and ‘N’ – ‘N’ (normal) is the Day reading and ‘L’ (low) is the night reading

To read the meter:

  1. Switch to the screen with ‘KWH’ or wait until you see the screen(s) with ‘KWH’ – the numbers show your meter reading.
  2. Read the numbers including any zeros.
  3. You can disregard any numbers after the decimal point or comma.

Once you have your meter readings, enter them into the SystemsLink database (see the Simple User Guide).
